So.. are all registries created equal? How do you choose a registry? Does it even matter what registry you work with?? Well, since this is our blog, we are going to shed some light on our experiences with registries, and which ones we like best and why. Lets start by answering the above questions: Are ALL Registries created equal? --NO-- Each registry has their own budget, their own sponsored programs, and their own fee schedule. Membership fees vary between registries, as do the availability of shows, or breeding/dairy programs. Does it really matter which registry you use? --YES-- You want to register your animals with the registry(ies) that is(are) most active in your area. This makes it far easier for you to find certified Liner Appraisal scorers, DHI testers, and qualified show officials to help you get the best out of your goats. How do you choose a registry? I would recommend looking at the goat breeders in your area to see what registries they use. This is usually a strong indication of which registries are the most active for your area. It doesn't make much sense to register your Toggenburg with AGS if there are no AGS sanctioned shows held in your state, or any certified herd testers that can report to AGS. Then, you will want to consider the types of programs you want to partake in. If you are too far for attending shows, or don't want to show you still may want to find qualified testers for Linear Appraisals, or DHI (milk production testing). If you don't want to partake in ANY programs, I don't know what to tell you. But your customers (people buying from you) may want to show, so you will still want to choose at least one active registry in your area to give OTHER people the chance to get more involved with raising their goats. Most of the TOP breeding herds that produce the best milking and show animals in the entire country started out as just a small 4-H project! You never know... Your goats may pave the way for someone else....
