Its NOVEMBER, and that means a lot of things around here! But more importantly it means breeding season has begun for our goats and sheep. So as we make plans for who is going to be paired with who, there are a few health/ maintenance things that all our goats need before breeding actually takes place. The Check list:
Why?? Why do all these things? Is it even necessary???
It may/ may not seem necessary or important especially when your goats in all appearances 'look' healthy. We make sure we give our does and BUCKS extra vitamin supplementation and make sure their worm bio-loads are down before breeding, because this is a very stressful time for your animals. And having extra minerals not only increases fertility in the Bucks, but also helps to give your does a little extra 'boost' that can help them carry their kids healthily to term. And we like to spoil our goats! Any opportunity to be hands on, and check them over is a great opportunity to bond with your goats. And lets you catch things like puncture wounds, before they get out of control/infected. Which may adversely effect your goats health.
